As a blogger for Insurance School Florida, I’m watching the insurance fallout from Washington’s Health Care Bill . Insurers feel defeated because it’s law , however there are areas where the Industry can still actively influence the law and how it is interpreted .
There are many provisions that are black and white such as discriminating against youth with pre-existing conditions. Another straight forward example is allowing children to remain on parent’s insurance plan until they are twenty-six years old. (A study found that children who remain on their parent’s insurance will raise employer premiums by one % . That’s over three thousand dollars for each dependent.)
But among the two-thousand pages of the Health-Care-Law , there are over 1200 instances where the Health and Human Services Secretary can make policy at their discretion. That means there are Edit this text grey areas that need to be worked out. Health Insurers can influence the government in those decisions.
So for those Insurers who believe they lost any influence on the Bill, they can now work to shape the actual law . Insurers need to put forward their best case on how to provide services at the best cost without just pushing the costs to the employer or insurer .
Insurers shouldn’t wage a war they can’t win . They should work within the spirit of the law, instead of just looking for loopholes like some did when they said they could get around insuring children with pre-existing conditions, not by dropping those children, but by not issuing them a policy .
The provisions must be fininshed by September 23rd, so there is a lot of work to be completed . These few months will affect the Industry for decades to come . Dig in and make a gray area help you .
